The Alternative (worship service and small group discussion)

The Senior High Youth at Calvary and at Church of the Holy Communion meet at Holy Communion on Wednesday evenings for "The Alternative," an alternative style of worship for young people. It is different from the Sunday morning liturgy in that it incorporates non-traditional music and a little more contemporary language. It is 90% led by youth and it is not strange for a young person to give the "reflection" (or mini-homily) on the Gospel from the past Sunday.
After the prayer, every person is invited to light a candle for their own specific prayers and concerns. The Alternative is a contemplative celebration full of spiritual food and fellowship for the young people from Calvary, Holy Communion, and all around the diocese.
After the service, everyone is invited to participate in small group time. Each small group has its own rituals, formulas, and rhythm according to the group dynamic. It is a time for God to lead thoughts and discussion around life issues and hard topics, but not lacking in laughter and fun. Each group is centered around confidentiality and the understanding that the life journey is a group effort, and no one gets left behind.
